One thing that will help you with your creative problem solving is to increase your brainpower. This may seem like an overwhelming task, but in reality you can do it right now, in the next few minutes.
Posture
Sit up straight, and close your mouth. Good posture affects your state of mind, and helps you to think more clearly. Try an experiment to prove this to yourself. Do math problems in your head; first while slouching, with your mouth open; then while sitting up straight with your lips together. You'll see how much of a difference it makes.
Exercise
Ten to fifteen minutes per day of exercise has been shown to increase brain power by 30 percent. For results right now, try working on a problem while you take a walk. The increased blood flow will help you think more clearly, as will the after-effect of a more relaxed state. There is also something about the rhythmic movement that helps calm the brain.
Caffeine
The research shows that coffee and other drinks containing caffeine help students consistently score higher on tests. Since caffeine restricts blood vessels in the brain, it isn't clear what the longer-term effects may be when it comes to your brainpower. My own experience is that caffeine is most useful for analytical work than for creative work.
Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo biloba has been shown to increase blood flow to the brain, and improve concentration. You can get it in many forms, including tea, at natural food stores and some supermarkets. The trees are also planted in many parks. Just eat two leaves.
Cycles of Consciousness
Your consciousness waxes and wanes throughout the day . For most it seems to go through 90 minute cycles, with 30 minutes of lower consciousness. Watch for this cycle and track your mental state. Then you can concentrate on important mental tasks when your mind is most "awake". For creative insight into a problem, work on it when you are in a drowsy state, when your conscious mind has slowed down.
Avoid Sugar
Actually any simple carbohydrates taken in large quantities can give you that sluggish feeling that makes it difficult to think. This is due to the insulin that is dumped into your veins after the sugar is. Don't eat white flour, sugar, potatoes, and other carbs before an important meeting, problem solving session, or anytime you need full use of your intelligence.
Breath Deeply
This is one of the easiest and most effective ways to improve the functioning of your brain immediately. By breathing deeply we relax and put more oxygen in the blood (therefore in the brain), both of which help. Relaxation has been proven to improve brain function. Low oxygen levels in the blood have been shown to decrease it. Since most of us are in the habit of breathing too shallowly, this is a quick way to increase IQ. By the way, if you breath through your nose, you are more likely to breath deeply.
Sleep Well
You knew this one, right? Just remember, the evidence shows us that the quality of sleep is very important, not just the quantity.
Use these and other brainpower boosters regularly and you'll notice the difference.
